Before applying for a swab kit we need to ask you a few questions to confirm your eligibility. Your cheek swab sample will be tested for Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genetic markers, ABO and Rhesus blood group and a common, flu-like virus called Cytomegalovirus (CMV). This data will be used to add you to our stem cell panel along with your details. Registries and transplant centres all over the world search the panel looking for a match for patients in need of a stem cell transplant.
Unfortunately, you will be unable to donate if you have any of the following conditions:
- Severe heart, lung or kidney diseases
- Severe illness of the central nervous system
- Severe mental health conditions
- Severe metabolic diseases
- Addictions (alcohol, drugs, tablets)
- Severe tropical infectious diseases
- Infectious diseases such as HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. (even if you are having or have received treatment)
- Systemic autoimmune diseases or other severe chronic illness
- Cancer (past or present). Exception: Basalioma and cervical carcinoma in situ (if fully removed)
- Blood disorders
- Suffered a stroke
- Taking many medication for diabetes
- Weigh under 7 stone 12lbs / 50kg
- BMI of over 40
